FAQ & Glossary
What Does Breakout Mean?
Learn how one high-speed port can connect to multiple lower-speed endpoints.
Overview
A breakout divides lanes from one parent port into several child links. It requires a supported host mode and a cable or optical system with the correct lane mapping.
Key planning checks
- Record parent and child speeds.
- Confirm number and type of endpoints.
- Preserve topology in the part description.
- Verify host configuration at both sides.

Keep the unknowns visible
A fan-out cable is not usable unless the port supports that specific breakout.
